COVID-19 and Public Spaces: Improving Quality and Resilience for Healthier Places Case Study Liberty Square in Biskra

The current Covid-19 pandemic has interested the world, changing habits and use of places. During the lockdown period, public spaces became empty, and new urban landscapes replaced the previous ones, transforming the private into the public. Children, young and elderly people were those who mainly had problems: to them, real life was negated at the time of their life, which is more critical reopening all public spaces once again allowed social interactions “in the presence”, although with respect for physical distancing, confirming the importance of these places for all. Safe urban public spaces are essential due to their public health implications, especially during the COVID-19 epidemic. Considering the risks of virus transmission calls for thinking about how these urban spaces are designed. This work, therefore, looks at how to reconsider the design of urban landscape elements to control the transmission dynamics of COVID-19.
 
 

Topological Characteristics of an Architectural Product الخصائص الطوبولوجیة للنتاج المعماری

Topology or spatial science is one of the branches of modern mathematics that cast a shadow over various cognitive sciences, including architecture, as it began to overgrow in the contemporary digital age to make room for more creativity and structural design and implementation capabilities. Yet, the characteristics of this concept are still uncommon in the architectural community and the previous studies that dealt with it in fragmentary and separate concepts. Accordingly, the research problem is “the ambiguity of knowledge about the topological characteristics of contemporary architectural products.” The research seeks to form a comprehensive theoretical framework on the topological characteristics represented by flexibility, fluidity and integration. These characteristics were generated by influential topological theories and previous studies that dealt with this concept, such as adaptation theory, knot theory and symmetry theory. Its concepts and vocabulary helped establish a formative structure in contemporary architectural products and then applied this to the selected samples. It resulted in a knowledge base that allows designers to gain more creativity, uniqueness and inspiration, depending on the descriptive-analytical approach.
 
 
الطوبولوجیا أو علم المکان هو أحد فروع الریاضیات الحدیثة التی ألقت بظلالها على مختلف العلوم المعرفیة ومنها العمارة. حیث بدأ ینمو بشکل متسارع فی العصر الرقمی المعاصر لیفسح المجال لمزید من الإبداع والقدرة التصمیمیة والتنفیذیة الهیکلیة، لکن خصائص هذا المفهوم مازالت غیر شائعة فی الأوساط المعماریة والدراسات السابقة التی تناولتها بشکل مجتزء وبمفاهیم منفصلة، علیه تم تحدید المشکلة البحثیة بـ " غموض المعرفة حول الخصائص الطوبولوجیة للنتاجات المعماریة المعاصرة "حیث یسعى البحث الى تکوین إطار نظری شامل عن الخصائص الطوبولوجیة المتمثلة بـ المرونة والسیولة والتکاملیة والتی تولدت من بعض النظریات الطوبولوجیة المؤثرة التی تناولت هذا المفهوم مثل نظریة التطویع ونظریة العقدة ونظریة التماثل بما تحتویه من مفاهیم ومفردات ساعدت فی تأسیس بنیة تشکیلیة وتکوینیة فی النتاجات المعماریة المعاصرة، من ثم تطبیق ذلک على العینات المنتخبة، لینتج عنه قاعدة معرفیة تفسح المجال للمصممین لمزید من الإبداع والتفرد والإلهام وذلک إعتماداً على المنهج الوصفی التحلیلی .
 

Design Characteristics And Flexibility in University Buildings : Mosul University as a Case Study

Flexibility is one of the principal factors in architecture to which a paramount significance must be attached. This significance gains more ground in contemporary life in which change accelerates in a tremendous speed, for today's design might not meet tomorrow's needs without shifts or modification and this applies to the University buildings more than any other buildings in comparison. However, by reviewing the theoretical hypotheses tackling this topic in architecture on the one hand, and critically analysing architecture research on it, on the other hand; it results that none of these hypotheses or investigations have adequately or clearly determined the impact of the functional context and spatial of these buildings in the light of the further impact ofthese characteristics. It emerges that these studies have all not provided a clear-cut delineation of those characteristics that most affect flexibility in buildings so as to satisf, the designer needs for future design giving due concem to architectural space from the every beginning.
 
تعتبر المرونة عاملا هاما یتطلب مراعاته فی التصمیم المعماری خاصة فی العصر الحالی لما تتسم به الحیاة المعاصرة من تغییرات متسارعة فتصمیم الیوم قد لا یتفق مع متطلبات الغد دون تغییر أو تعدیل. والمنظومة الجامعیة من اکثر المنظومات المتأثرة بتلک التغییرات. ومن خلا مراجعة الطروحت النظریة التی تناولت هذا الموضوع فی العمارة من جهة ونقد وتحلیل الدراسات المعماریة التی تناولته فی دراسات عملیة من جهة أخرى ، تبین غیاب تحدید تأثیر السیاق الوظیفی والنمط الفضائی لهذه الابنیة فی درجة تأثیر هذه الخصائص . کما ان الدراسات السابقة لم توفر تحدیدا واضحا للخصائص الأکثر تثیرا فی مرونة الابنیة بما یلبی حاجة المصمم للتوظیف فی التصامیم المستقبلیة وامکانیة تقییم مرونة فضاءات الابنیة من مخططاتها الاولیة .
