Development measures for slums of Dhaka city : Case study area Korail slum

Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh is extremely populated, unhygienic and environmentally degraded city. The growing number of population and environmental degradation are due to natural disaster and economic depression. As a result, the rate of urban poor is and producing huge pressure on urban lands, housing and infrastructure. Due to limited resources these poor people encroached open spaces, wetlands, vacant plots or even footpath for shelter. They don’t have any access to proper job market, healthcare facilities, education and sanitation either. These constraints are mostly resulted from the failures of the government in initiation proper policies and measures. Past policies of slum clearance, modernist apartment projects, housing provision, self-help, sites and services, and in-situ upgrading have not been effective at solving the crisis. This is now prime time to established planning and environmental management policy and sustainable development of the city area. Urban land management, rehabilitation and socio-economic development of the slum dwellers are also very important issues. The key focus of this paper is to find out sustainable development process for urban slum dwellers and build sustainable living place for them which are free from eviction, criminals, rent seekers and other miscreants.

Sustainability Systems in Architecture

The research deals with the concept of sustainable systems as one of the influential concepts in the process of architectural design, as it is defined as "the integration of natural systems with human patterns according to a multi-dimensional design approach to give continuity and exclusivity to the product". The research aims to clarify the strategy of sustainable architecture systems as well as their principles and dimensions. In order to address the research issue and achieve the objectives of the research and to verify its hypothesis, a knowledge framework was first built, then a comprehensive theoretical framework for sustainable architecture systems. Sustainable architectural systems, then an exploratory study assessing the quality level, and finally reached a set of conclusions that provided for a correlation between the duality of "architecture systems and sustainability systems", and in terms of: "engineering, and functional"; Its philosophy lies in its simulation of natural systems, both formally and practically.
یتناول البحث مفهوم النظم المستدامة کأحد المفاهیم المؤثرة فی عملیة التصمیم المعماری، إذ تعرف على انها "تکامل الانظمة الطبیعیة مع الانماط الانسانیة وفق منهج تصمیمی متعدد الابعاد لإعطاء الاستمراریة والتفرد للنتاج"، وبذلک تتحدد المشکلة البحثیة فی (بلورة تصور نظری شامل عن نظم الاستدامة فی العمارة). ویهدف البحث إلى توضیح ستراتیجیة نظم العمارة المستدامة فضلا عن مبادئها وأبعادها, وبناءا علیه یفترض البحث أن لمؤشرات النظم المستدامة أثر ایجابی فی صیاغة النصوص المعماریة. ولغرض معالجة القضیة البحثیة وتحقیق أهداف البحث والتحقق من فرضیته تم أولا بناء أطار معرفی، ثم أطار نظری شامل لنظم العمارة المستدامة استخلص من الطروحات المعماریة والطروحات الساندة لیتجسد بصیغته النهائیة فی ثلاثة مؤشرات رئیسیة, وهی: ستراتیجیة نظم العمارة المستدامة, ومبادئ نظم العمارة المستدامة، وابعاد نظم العمارة المستدامة، ثم عمل دراسة استکشافیة تقیم مستوى جودتها, وأخیرا تم التوصل إلى مجموعة من الاستنتاجات التی نصت على وجود علاقة تعالقیة بین ثنائیة "نظم العمارة, ونظم الاستدامة", ومن الناحیتین: "الهندسیة, والوظیفیة"؛ نظرا لأثرهما کمداخل بیئیة وبیومناخیة وایکولوجیة إذ تکمن فلسفتها فی محاکاتها للنظم الطبیعیة شکلیاً وعملیاً مما ینسق العلاقات الفراغیة بین المبنى والبیئة المحیطه به ویضمن دیمومتهِ.

Environmental Design between heritage and contemporary

The research aims to demonstrate the importance of the intellectual and technological climate of the era, which is witnessing the development of vocabulary, which is completely different from another time period. Each generation has its own intellectual and technological specificity. In the context of this intellectual environment will discuss the sustainable climate system affecting the vocabulary of design, and how to achieve the comfort of the human in two different times; the first heritage of the old and the other contemporary. And how we can draw the basic concepts of this system at both times to conclude the different climatic treatments of the Environmental Design between the past and present. The ultimate goal of all this is the comfort of man .The research assumes that there is an important impact of temporal privacy and all that is linked culturally, socially and technologically to the possibility of benefiting from the environmental design treatments available in architecture aimed at achieving human comfort .Therefore, the objective of the research is to confirm this hypothesis through a series of appropriate contextual data. The search results will support the hypothesis .It recommends the adoption of environmental design within the intellectual and technological context of the era. With the need to move away from the environmental solutions of earlier times in the design of the contemporary urban environment because of the difference (intellectual - technological) between them. And replace it by taking advantage of the general principles of heritage solutions at the environmental, intellectual or technological level from a sustainable environmental and climatic perspective. .

Traditional architectural type simulation strategy to fulfil environmental sustainability Courtyard type as a model

In last decades, many architectural tendencies has appeared, that adapting sustainability, with various nominations, but with same or close meanings that refer to same concept. It's all dealing with principles, characteristics, dimensions, and elements of sustainable design, but it were lack to such a comprehensive framework treatment method. which resulting with abstrusely vision for the designer, globally and locally, to determine lineaments of design strategy, that depending on an environmental fundament, with sustainable impression. This abstrusity is the "research problem". This strategy may be strike from fundamental environmental design concept. There for, the research, suppose that, there is an ability to create general conceptual framework, can be used to specify or determine lineaments of design strategies, depending on an environmental idea, that able to give the project such a sustainability characteristic. According to this, the research aim specified as formulating general conceptual framework that having ability to assess projects or architectural designs, and specify or recognize adopted design strategy that strike from sustainable environmental fundament.
To fulfill the aim, the research contains three terms. The first one focused on environment and sustainability, in order to understand accredited fundaments, which used to formulate sustainable environmental assessment and design systems, and to produce such a procedural definition for sustainable environmental design. Second term utilize results of former term to formulate a comprehensive theoretical framework, with primary terms and secondary indicators, which inserted in separated table to be implement in term three on selected project (modern courtyard house) to get results which discussed with its two sides, theoretical and practical, to put results and conclusions..

Sustainable design from theorizing to application

The architecture field is considered as one of the most prominent specialized fields which the sustainability can be seen in the theoretical and applied level that is committed to the sustainability and its concepts, taking in consternation the complicity that characterize this field came the variety in the act of sustainability. However, this commitment and variety have not been framed (here lies the research problem), the Aim of the research is find a clear framework for the application of sustainability in architecture.
To that the research was focused in searching for the way that make the sustainable design be seen in architecture, and the possibility that can be achieved on the other hand by an analytic study in comparison to practical experiments to the sustainable design applications which can be able to make the theoretical framework for the practice of sustainability in architecture as follows: (Future visions and strategies for sustainable cities, Global forums - World Expo, Standards and systems that assess the sustainability of the projects, Assistant computer programs and tools for the sustainable design, Architectural projects.)
The analytic and comparison method follow for the international and Arabic practical experiments, to achieve the research goal, which seeks to frame the scientific applications of the sustainable design in architecture..
